- „Automatie“ ist eine performative Installation, bestehend aus einem Drei-Kanal-Video, einem kinetischen Objekt und einer Performerin. Die gesamte Installation ist ein Loop, allerdings mit einem konkreten Anfang. Zu Beginn lässt die Performerin die ZuschauerInnen in den Raum hinein, der ca. 7-minütige Zyklus beginnt und wiederholt sich danach ständig.
Im Raum selbst steht ein Stuhl, der mit einer Apparatur verbunden ist, die ihn auf den Hinterbeinen vor und zurück kippeln lässt, bis er sich schließlich löst und auf allen vier Beinen zum Stillstand kommt.
Das Video wird auf drei Leinwänden abgespielt, die jeweils einen unterschiedlichen Blickwinkel auf das Geschehen zeigen. Zu sehen ist eine Apparatur, die sich um eine Kerze dreht, an deren beiden Enden der Docht freiliegt. Durch die Drehbewegung der Apparatur wird die Kerze an einer Seite angezündet und zeitgleich an der anderen gelöscht. Mit jedem Wechsel macht das Licht der Kerze eine Person sichtbar, bzw. verbirgt sie im Dunkeln. Die Stuhlapparatur und das one-take-video der Kerzenapparatur werden abwechselnd von der Performerin initiiert und beobachtet.
Beide Apparate verfolgen weder ein Ziel noch eine erkennbare Funktion, sind nicht produktiv im effizienten Sinne. Sie beschreiben vielmehr in sich geschlossene Prozesse, die aus sich selbst heraus enden und von der Performerin immer wieder aufs Neue in Gang gesetzt werden. Die Apparate und die Performerin sind ständig in Bewegung, doch keiner bewegt sich fort.
Die Spannung liegt in den Beziehungen, Übereinstimmungen und (scheinbaren) Aktionen und Reaktionen, die in diesem Raum stattfinden und entstehen.
Rana Karan schreibt über die Arbeit: „[Die Installation] Automatie produziert ein Gefühl der Vergänglichkeit, das sich als ein zentrales Motiv der Arbeit darstellt. In einer melancholischen Sehnsucht evoziert sie den Eindruck einer Erinnerung, die nicht mehr in einen gegenwärtigen Zustand zurück zu bringen ist. [...] Dieses Bild der Melancholie [eröffnet], ganz im Sinne der dichterischen Bilder Bachelards, einen Zugang zu den Bildern der Vergangenheit und verknüpft sie mit den eigenen Bildern: ‚[D]urch den Aufklang eines Bildes werden Echos in der fernen Vergangenheit geweckt, und es ist kaum abzusehen, bis zu welcher Tiefe diese Echos hinabreichen, ehe sie verhallen. In seiner Neuheit, in seiner Aktivität, besitzt das dichterische Bild ein eigenes Wesen, eine eigene Dynamik.’ (Bachelard, Gaston: Poetik des Raumes) Automatie ermöglicht den BetrachterInnen eine eigene, träumerische Dynamik zu entwickeln und bietet einen subjektiven Schutzraum der Deutungsmöglichkeiten. [...] Die BetrachterInnen selbst können diesen Ort zu jeder Zeit verlassen, doch er scheint nie zu verschwinden oder zu erstarren – er bildet einen Ort der Verbindlichkeit.“

- "Über das Bekämpfen der Angst (vor der Welt)" ist eine spekulative Videoarbeit, die ein Spektrum von Phänomenen rund um Karten, Angst, Krieg, Reisen und den Körper abdeckt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der Praxis der Kartierung als Instrument zur Unterdrückung und Kontrolle von Land und Menschen liegt. Das Video versucht, einen Rahmen für das Thema zu schaffen, indem es viele verschiedene Geschichten zu einem Cluster zusammenführt, der vielleicht nicht repräsentativ ist, aber einige Teile des Themas beleuchtet. Ästhetisch und strukturell ist das Video von Rollenspielen, der Pre-Vis-Technik (die in Filmproduktionen verwendet wird) und Found Footage inspiriert. Das Szenario ist in einer fernen Zukunft angesiedelt, in der Klimawandel und Massenaussterben längst ihre Auswirkungen gezeigt haben und die Bestien, die vor der großen Kolonisierung über das Unbekannte wachten, zurückgekehrt sind. In der Rolle der Hauptfigur sucht der Zuschauer, angeleitet von einem Erzähler, nach Überresten der alten Welt, um zu verstehen, warum alles kartiert werden musste.

- "About Fighting the Fear (of the World)" is a speculative video work that covers a spectrum of phenomena around maps, fear, war, traveling, and the body, with a focus on the practice of mapping as a tool to oppress and control land and people. The video attempts to frame the issue by bringing together many different stories to create a cluster that may not be representative but illuminates some parts of the issue. Aesthetically and structurally, the video is inspired by role-playing games, pre-vis technique (used in film productions), and found footage. The scenario is set in a distant future in which climate change and mass extinction have long since had an impact and beasts that used to watch over the unknown before the big colonization have returned. As the main character, the viewer searches for remnants of the old world, guided by a narrator, in order to understand why everything had to be mapped.

- In "a staged performance at a place no longer quiet" werden fünf klischeehafte Figuren durch Animation zum Leben erweckt und durch Requisiten in der physischen Welt mit Körpern ausgestattet. Anstatt eine Handlung zu entwickeln, bleiben sie in ihren Monologen stecken und reflektieren über ihre zugewiesenen Rollen. Die Figuren warten auf den Moment, in dem die Geschichte beginnen soll. Da das Stück jedoch nie beginnt und die klassische Struktur einer Aufführung auseinanderfällt, können die Figuren nicht in einen Dialog miteinander treten, sondern nur für sich selbst sprechen. Jeder verkörpert individuell seine Rolle und die vielen Geschichten, die mit ihm erzählt wurden. In den Rissen zwischen den Fragmenten, aus denen sie bestehen, geben alle fünf Figuren einen Einblick, wie wir Geschichten konstruieren und Zeichnungen zum Leben erwecken.

- In "a staged performance at a place no longer quiet", five cliché characters are brought to life through animation and given bodies through props in the physical world. Instead of developing a plot, they remain stuck in their monologues and reflect on their assigned roles. The characters wait for the moment of a story to begin. However, as the play never begins and the classical structure of a performance falls apart, the characters cannot enter into a dialogue with each other, but only speak for themselves. Each one embodies their role individually and the many stories that have been told with them. In the cracks between the fragments of which they are made, all five characters provide an insight into how we construct stories and bring drawings to life.

Das 18-tägige Programm erzählt von der alltäglichen und handwerklichen Arbeit der Wäscher*innen und dem Stigma, dem sie ausgesetzt sind. Das Waschen der Wäsche wird zu einem Referenzraum, um sich mit der Schnittstelle von Care-Arbeit und Lohnarbeit auseinanderzusetzen.

Users and the use that they make — which together we refer to as usership — form a kind of atmosphere, in both the most literal and most figurative sense. Unlike ownership, usership is not a fiction bolstered and legitimated by institutions, but a collective subjectivity comprised of all the agents — human and other-than-human — who make use of a given territory or environment, ensuring the oxygen exchange of the atmosphere. Indeed, as users they are the artisans of that environment, the landscapers and artists of the atmosphere that sustains it. What would it mean, though, for public institutions to foster an atmosphere of usership?

Bis 1979 waren von den geplanten 893 Zeichen 262 fertiggestellt, in Kombination miteinander ergeben sich aus ihnen über 394 Variationen. [...] Die Ausstellung "all the things you are." geht diesem Katalog nach und zeigt neben originalen Drucken, auch eine Auswahl an Manuskripten und Plänen. - Das Seminar erforscht die Wechselwirkungen zwischen gesprochener Sprache und gesetzter Schrift und geht dabei der Frage nach, welche gestalterischen Bedingungen diesen beiden Formaten zu Grunde liegen,
was ihnen gemeinsam ist und wo sie sich unterscheiden Anders formuliert könnte die Frage lauten: Wie schaut Sound aus und wie klingt Typografie? Ausgangspunkt bildet das Buch „All the Stories“ der Künstlerin Dora Garcia, einer Sammlung von tausenden von Kürzestgeschichten mit der ungefähren Länge einer SMS, die von einer anonymen Netzgemeinschaft verfasst und auf einem Tumblr gepostet wurden. Eine
Auswahl aus diesen Geschichten werden alternierend als Ton-Dokument, als gedrucktes Plakat sowie als Animationsfilm umgesetzt, so dass verschiedene Aggregatzustände eines immer gleichen Inhalts sicht- und
hörbar gemacht werden.
Die Einträge aus „All the Stories“ lesen sich wie Plots für Filme, und so liegt es auf der Hand als Präsentationsort für die Animationsfilme mit dem Vorprogramm eines Karlsruher Kinos zu kooperieren.

- Mit einer Kombination aus praktischen, experimentellen und forschungsbasierten Ansätzen und einem Fokus auf Materialien untersuchten Studierende und Lehrende im Seminar Afterfire unsere Beziehung zum Feuer im Laufe der Geschichte und im Vergleich zu heute. Geleitet von den Gastprofessoren Paco Boekelmann und Kevin Rouff von Studio Thusthat fand das Seminar im Wintersemester 2022/23 an der HfG Karlsruhe statt.
In einer Zeit von Kriegen, knappen Energieressourcen und der Klimakrise konzentrierte sich das Afterfire Seminar auf unsere besondere Übergangszeit, in der wir uns (theoretisch) von fossilen Brennstoffen entfernen und nach neuen Feuerquellen suchen. In Vorträgen, Gastvorträgen, Ortsbesichtigungen, Workshops und Einzelarbeiten untersuchten Studierende und Lehrende die Nutzung von Feuer und verschiedenen Brennstoffen im Laufe der Jahrhunderte und konzentrierten sich dabei auf das, was nach dem Feuer übrig bleibt - die Asche.
Nach einem Besuch des Kohlekraftwerks im Karlsruher Rheinhafen organisierte Studio Thusthat einen Workshop, um den Vorläufer der Steinkohle zu erforschen: die Holzkohle. Die Studierenden schufen Werkstücke, hauptsächlich aus Holz, und bauten einen Ofen, in dem alle Objekte am letzten Tag des Workshops ohne Sauerstoff gebrannt wurden, so dass sie zu Holzkohle wurden.
Der zweite Workshop konzentrierte sich auf die drei "neuen" wichtigsten alternativen Brennstoffsektoren: den Bereich der holzigen Biomasse, den Bereich der landwirtschaftlichen Nebenprodukte und den Bereich der Energiegewinnung aus Abfällen. Zwei Tage lang analysierten die Studierenden in Gruppenarbeit die repräsentativen Brennstoffe Holz, Stroh und Siedlungsabfälle im Hinblick auf die vielen Nuancen, die für und gegen ihre Nutzung als Energiequelle sprechen.
Neben und in Verbindung mit den Workshops wurden im Laufe des Semesters individuelle studentische Projekte entwickelt, die auf den Recherchen von Studio Thusthat aufbauten und eigene Prozesse, Phänomene, Effekte oder Zusammenhänge von Feuer theoretisch und praktisch erarbeiteten.
Am Ende des Semesters wurden alle studentischen Projekte in einer Ausstellung im Lichthof der HfG Karlsruhe präsentiert, wo die Projekte der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurden. Eine Auswahl der Projekte, an denen die Studierenden über das Seminar hinaus weitergearbeitet haben, wurde beim Rundgang und bei der Karlsruher Museumsnacht 2023 ausgestellt.

- With a combination of practical, experimental and research-based approaches and a focus on materials, students and teachers in the Afterfire seminar examined our relationship to fire throughout history and in comparison to today. Led by guest professors Paco Boekelmann and Kevin Rouff from Studio Thusthat, the seminar took place in the winter semester 2022/23 at the HfG Karlsruhe.
In a time of wars, scarce energy resources and climate crisis, the Afterfire Seminar focused on our particular transitional period in which we are (theoretically) moving away from fossil fuels and looking for new sources of fire. Through lectures, guest talks, site visits, workshops and individual work, students and teachers explored the use of fire and different fuels over the centuries, focussing on what remains after the fire - the ash.
Following a visit to the coal-fired power station in Karlsruhe's Rheinhafen, Studio Thusthat organised a workshop to explore the precursor to hard coal: charcoal. The students created workpieces, mainly out of wood, and built a kiln in which all the objects were burnt without oxygen on the last day of the workshop, turning them into charcoal.
The second workshop focussed on the three "new" main alternative fuel sectors: the woody biomass sector, the agricultural by-products sector and the waste-to-energy sector. For two days, students worked in groups to analyse the representative fuels wood, straw and municipal waste with regard to the many nuances that speak both for and against their use as an energy source.
Alongside and in conjunction with the workshops, individual student projects were developed throughout the semester, which built on Studio Thusthat's research and worked out their own processes, phenomena, effects or connections of fire in theory and practice.
At the end of the semester, all student projects were presented in an exhibition in the Lichthof of the HfG Karlsruhe, where the projects were explained and shown to the public. A selection of the projects on which students continued to work beyond the seminar was exhibited during the Rundgang and at the Karlsruhe Museumsnacht 2023.

- Von der Geschichte des Feuers bis zur Untersuchung seiner Bedeutung für die menschliche Gesellschaft habe ich eine Verbindung zwischen Feuer und Farben entdeckt: Metalle erzeugen unter bestimmten Verbrennungsbedingungen verschiedene Farben, die auch als wichtige Farbstoffe in der Glasurenherstellung dienen. Ich habe Zusammenhänge zwischen Metallen, Flammen, Farben und Glasuren gefunden, die auf den ersten Blick unzusammenhängend erscheinen, aber sich tatsächlich gegenseitig ergänzen. Mein Fokus liegt nun auf dem Stahlwerk in Kehl. Ich bin neugierig auf die verschiedenen Prozesse, die bei der Stahlerzeugung verwendet werden, sowie auf die entstehenden industriellen Nebenprodukte. Während meiner Recherchen stieß ich auf ein Nebenprodukt namens Schrott, das während des Walzprozesses entsteht, wenn die Oberfläche des Stahls mit Luft reagiert und hauptsächlich aus Eisenoxid besteht. Es ist ungiftig, aber aufgrund des niedrigen Eisengehalts sind die Recyclingkosten zu hoch, weshalb es oft von Stahlwerken zu einem niedrigen Preis verkauft und als Material für Straßenbau verwendet wird. Ich habe Kontakt mit dem Stahlwerk aufgenommen und etwa zehn Kilogramm dieses Materials aus Kehl erhalten. Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, wie ich dieses industrielle Nebenprodukt wieder verwenden kann, indem ich es durch Design-Upcycling verbessere, anstatt es abzubauen. Basierend auf meiner früheren Forschung zeigt Eisen als relativ aktives Metall in oxidativen und reduktiven Reaktionen bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen eine reiche Farbpalette. Daher ist Eisen ein wichtiger Farbstoff in der Glasurenherstellung. Ich habe begonnen, das Schrott als Rohstoff in verschiedenen Mischungsverhältnissen mit anderen chemischen Elementen für Glasurexperimente zu verwenden, in der Hoffnung, die Möglichkeit zu sehen, Industrieabfälle in einer anderen Branche als Rohstoffe wiederzuverwenden. Wenn Menschen mit Ressourcenknappheit und Umweltkrise konfrontiert sind, ist es dringend erforderlich, die Produktionsschritte, die sich aufgrund der industriellen Revolution einst unabhängig voneinander entwickelt haben, neu zu überdenken und die Verbindungen zwischen ihnen wiederherzustellen. Dies ist eine wichtige Fragestellung, über die zeitgenössisches Design nachdenken sollte.

- From understanding the history of fire to researching its significance for human society, I discovered a connection between fire and colors: under specific combustion conditions, metallic elements produce various colors, which also serve as important colorants in glaze production. I found correlations between metals, flames, colors, and glazes, seemingly unrelated clues that actually complement each other. My focus now lies on the steelworks located in Kehl. I am curious about the various processes used in steelmaking and the resulting industrial by-products. During my research, I came across an industrial by-product called slag, which is formed during the steel rolling process when the surface of the steel reacts with air, primarily consisting of iron oxide. It is non-toxic, but due to its low iron content, the cost of recycling is too high, so it is often sold by steelworks at a low price and used as material for road embankments. I contacted the steelworks and obtained nearly ten kilograms of this material from Kehl. I began to consider how to reuse this industrial by-product by designing upgrades rather than downgrading it for disposal. Based on my previous research, iron, as a relatively active metal, exhibits a rich range of colors in oxidative and reductive reactions at different temperatures, making it an important colorant in glaze formulation. I started experimenting with the slag as a raw material in glaze formulations, mixing it with other chemical elements in different proportions, hoping to explore the possibility of industrial waste redevelopment in another industry. The result was surprising; even on the test samples, the slag showed potential as a colorant. If the research continues, it is possible to develop new glazes using various industrial wastes. Through this research, I see the possibilities of design in modern industry. When faced with resource depletion and environmental crisis, it is imperative to rethink the production steps that once developed independently due to the industrial revolution and to rediscover the connections between them. This is a critical issue for contemporary design to consider.

- We live in times of high competition. Survival of the fittest is the omnipresent motto in most fields of human action, especially in the western world. This philosophy was only established about 200 years ago and manifested by Charles Darwin and especially the Social Darwinists at the end of the 19th century. They believed that according to a law of nature, only the physically strongest and most aggressive individuals and species would survive in the struggle for life. Many Social Darwinists justified therefore capitalism and racism with devastating consequences in the coming decades until nowadays.
Peter Kropotkin is attempting in his philosophical work Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (1902) to dismantle their arguments and based on numerous observations of zoologists and anthropologists, he proves, that the fittest species are the most sociable ones and that sociability develops intelligence, which is the most powerful arm in the struggle for survival. This includes insects, animals and humans. Higher moral sentiments and compassion is also essential for survival in all societies.
The ritual burning of sage in nature should help to cleanse the negative energy of social darwinism in our world and make room for a more cooperative society, that will secure the well-being of all members, even the most weak ones and furthermore facilitate a more sustainable, safe and content society.
